2018 Historical Spring Floods on Kauai

Sinkhole on Kauai - Spring Flooding 2018The North Shore of Kauai was hit with record rainfall in April, 2018. Hanalei was flooded, causing many businesses to close for a period of time and closing the road past Hanalei. Today, most of Hanalei has reopened, though the road past Hanalei remains closed to all but local traffic. Black Pot Beach also remains closed.

Though the storm was fierce at the resort, there is little evidence of any impact today. Ten VOA units had some flood damage, mainly to carpet and padding. All ten were repaired and returned to service within a week. Two whole unit condos also sustained some flood damage. Hopefully the road past Hanalei will open again soon so all can access those beautiful areas once again.

Taking Care of Those Impacted

Though the Resort fared well through the flooding, not the same can be said for a number of the Resort’s Associates. Many suffered damages to their homes and family businesses, while others were cut off from their homes due to road closures.

Both Boards and Grand Pacific came together to create a GoFundMe to help Resort Associates who were impacted. Grand Pacific pledged to match dollar for dollar the first $10,000 that was raised. Due to the generosity of our Owners, over $27,000 was raised to assist Resort Staff. This money has been distributed on a confidential basis and the impact you made for these affected families was tremendous.

In addition, Habitat for Humanity is leading the way in the community to assist in the rebuilding of many of the damaged homes. The VOA Board is working with Habitat for Humanity to denote much of the furniture that will be replaced in the upcoming VOA unit remodel to assist in furnishing these homes.
